I LOVE cowgirl boots! They are comfy and practical and come in a crazy selection of patterns and shapes- from classic to super funky. I wear mine with dresses, denim, trousers, skirts, everything, and anything!

FUN FACT: I met my husband while two-stepping at a country bar in DC! I wore western boots mostly for dancing at that time of my life.

However, how to style cowgirl boots for everyday wear did throw me for a loop at first. How does one wear them without looking like you’re wearing a costume or just walking off the farm? Nothing is wrong with either scenario and if that’s your jam, you do you, boo. If you’re looking to make them a bit more of an everyday deal, then let’s dive in!

How To Style Cowgirl Boots: 3 Looks

(Dress: Collusion, same (Size M, secondhand on Mercari), Boots: ASOS, similar, Bag: River Island, similar (Zara, secondhand on Poshmark), Sunglasses: Quay, similar from Quay)

1: The Classic Western Boot.

This black pair is a simple and classic western boot! No embroidery or modern reinvention, no crazy colors or patterns. However, the patent sheen does add something unique and makes this boot easy to dress up or down.

I love the classic combo of boots, and a dress and cowgirl boots are perfect for the combo. However, by playing with the volume and shape of the dress, rather than wearing a cut like a skater dress, I avoided looking like I was going square dancing! Additionally, the print is a funky modern camo rather than a disty floral that can be too reminiscent of a Target prairie dress. Instead of chasing chickens, this look is perfect for a date night out to your favorite restaurant and a stroll around the art museum?

Takeaways: Pair with unique shapes and cuts, and avoid traditional patterns like ditsy flowers or tablecloth checks.

BTW: you think I have an ASOS addiction?! I gathered these pieces over three years. They each have a super low cpw (cost per wear) and show no sign of stopping their usefulness anytime soon!)

2: The Modern Update.

Yet another patent pair! This cream pair of cowgirl boots are a STATEMENT. I honestly get at least three compliments every time I wear them. Even with a sleek modern update, the question remains: how to style cowgirl boots? For this look, I went with a more maximalist feel and paired multiple patterns.

Despite the statement of the boots, they indeed are a simple piece, meaning they play well with bold patterns and even traditional prints like the ditsy floral of the top. Look 1 paired the boots with a flowy dress, but it’s more form-fitted for this look, which is a great juxtaposition against the bulk of the boots!

Takeaways: The modern update dabbles without being overwhelming if you want to go west but aren’t ready to commit. Pair with modern trends like maximalism and print clashing for a fresh look!

3: The Colorful Choice.

These are probably my FAVORITE pair that I own! Surprisingly, they are also the easiest when it comes to how to style cowgirl boots. I probably wear them three times a week. Note: I also own them in this pink but surprisingly always grab the green ones!

I wore them in the simplest way possible for these photos- a straight-up monochrome look. The style of the shoes matters less n this look than the COLOR does. They manage to blend in and stand out at the same time. You could easily do the same styling with a pair of colorful printed western boots!

Notice #1 with the super current shape of the dress and the shape of the boots. Also, #2 with the finish of the leather!

Takeaways: Monochrome can help you feel less like a wrangler and more like an icon when going with bright boots!

The biggest question is: have YOU styled a pair of cowgirl boots?!

Do you feel like they are a classic staple or a trendy statement? They can be such a polarizing style piece!

Id’ love to know your thoughts!
